Seattle Startup Homeostasis Secures $600K to Sequester Carbon and Convert It to GraphiteSeattle

Homeostasis is leading the way with a process to capture atmospheric CO₂ and convert it into graphite, an important industrial material for use in battery production, steelmaking, nuclear facilities, and defense. As the world graphite supply chain is controlled by China, Homeostasis’ innovation is an opportunity for the U.S. to enhance its domestic production of key minerals.

Revolutionizing Carbon Capture with Aqueous Mineralization
Homeostasis is working on aqueous mineralization capture technology, a state-of-the-art method of capturing CO₂ from the atmosphere. Rather than having CO₂ as waste, the company turns it into pure crystalline graphite, lessening dependence on mining activities while at the same time curbing climate change and industrial needs.

“CO₂ doesn’t need to be waste,” Homeostasis co-founder and chief scientist Julien Lombardi said. “We can bolster our energy system by converting excess carbon into a plentiful feedstock.”

Graphite has been recognized as a critical mineral by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), underscoring the strategic value of Homeostasis’ technology breakthrough.

Funding & Investor Support
Homeostasis’ $600K pre-seed funding was anchored by prominent investors, including:

✅ Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community
✅ Kayak Ventures
✅ Angel investors

Furthermore, in September 2024, the startup received a $700,000 grant under Washington State’s Climate Commitment Act, which added to its cash runway.

Operations & Research Expansion
Based in Tacoma, Washington, Homeostasis is designing, manufacturing, and testing its carbon capture system locally. Homeostasis has also collaborated with Clean Energy Testbeds at the University of Washington for technology development.

In the meantime, Homeostasis has research labs in New York to characterize and optimize the graphite product resulting from captured carbon.

Future Plans & Business Model
Homeostasis has created a prototype device and is preparing for pilot project installations by late 2025 or early 2026. The long-term plans of the startup include:

✅ Marketing carbon capture systems to industrial customers seeking sustainable CO₂ removal solutions.
✅ Building its own carbon capture plants, targeting industrial CO₂ emissions as well as direct air capture (DAC) technology.

By establishing an economically sustainable and scalable process for carbon conversion, Homeostasis seeks to bring sustainable graphite production to the marketplace and combat climate change.

Meet the Founders: The Visionaries of Homeostasis
The company was started by two experts from the industry with varied experience in science, engineering, and sustainability:

Makoto Eyre (CEO): An experienced engineer who had previously worked on carbon capture, worked as a space architect at Blue Origin, and has experience with neuroengineering and classical architecture.
Julien Lombardi (Chief Scientist): PhD in chemistry with significant research experience as a material sciences research scientist.
They collectively are steering Homeostasis into becoming a central player in the sustainable carbon economy.

Graphite Market Demand & Industry Impact
The graphite market is grappling with geopolitical risk, unstable supply chains, and astronomically increasing prices. Global production is dominated by China, and this exposes the supply chains for industries such as EV battery manufacturing, defense, and infrastructure.

The graphite market today is riddled with geopolitical risks, unstable supply availability, and high costs,” said Makoto Eyre. “The U.S. needs a stable, domestic, and low-cost source of graphite. Our technology responds to that need.

Carbon and emissions technology drew $12.2 billion in venture capital in 2024, even as funding plummeted by 40% versus earlier years. Homeostasis’ strategy has the potential to transform the industry with its scalable, sustainable domestic graphite supply.

Pacific Northwest Carbon Capture Startups
Homeostasis is part of a growing cluster of Pacific Northwest climate tech disruptors including:

✅ CarbonQuest
✅ Banyu Carbon
✅ Svante Technologies
✅ Ebb Carbon
✅ Carbon Engineering (Purchased by Occidental Petroleum in 2023)

With rising government investment, business interest, and technology advancements, the carbon capture industry is on the brink of exponential growth.
