Groww’s CTO Neeraj Singh: The Tech Architect Powering India’s Investment Revolution

From Flipkart engineering to fintech disruption, Neeraj Singh’s journey defines the next-gen of Indian wealth tech innovation.

Bengaluru | April 8, 2025 — In India’s rapidly transforming digital investment space, one name stands quietly yet powerfully behind the scenes—Neeraj Singh, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Groww, the fintech unicorn redefining how millions of Indians invest. With a deep background in product development, customer-focused engineering, and financial technology, Singh has emerged as the silent architect behind one of India’s most widely used and trusted investment platforms.

From Gwalior to California: A Cross-Continental Learning Path

Neeraj Singh’s journey began in Gwalior, where he earned his Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology from ITM University. Committed to building his technical capabilities, he further pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Computing (PG-DAC) from CDAC, India’s premier R&D institution under the Ministry of Electronics and IT.

His quest for product leadership took him abroad to the UCLA Anderson School of Management, where he completed his MBA with a focus on Product Management and Marketing. This educational blend of engineering, computing, and business gave Singh a holistic approach to building tech-enabled solutions with a user-first mindset.

Building Flipkart’s Core Systems

Before venturing into the fintech space, Singh honed his skills at Flipkart, where he served as an Engineering Manager. During his stint, he led the development of the customer returns and refund ecosystem—one of the most complex and high-touch functions in Indian e-commerce. His work in creating frictionless backend systems laid the foundation for what would later become his trademark strength: scalable, user-centric digital infrastructure.

Co-Founding Groww: Democratizing Finance with Technology

In 2016, Singh teamed up with fellow ex-Flipkart colleagues Lalit Keshre, Harsh Jain, and Ishan Bansal, all of whom shared a vision—to make investing in India simple, transparent, and accessible. That vision materialized in 2017 with the launch of Groww, aimed at addressing the complexities and barriers that discouraged young Indians from participating in financial markets.

As Chief Technology Officer, Singh leads Groww’s product and engineering teams. His priority? Ensuring that the platform delivers a streamlined user experience, especially for first-time investors navigating mutual funds, direct equities, and gold ETFs. His obsession with UX design, intuitive flows, and mobile-first architecture has played a crucial role in Groww’s mass-market appeal.

Scaling to a Fintech Unicorn

Under Singh’s technical leadership, Groww has rapidly evolved from a mutual funds-only app to a full-stack investment platform, offering:

  • Direct Stock Trading (NSE/BSE)
  • Mutual Funds (Regular & Direct)
  • Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs)
  • Initial Public Offerings (IPOs)
  • Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs)
  • Digital Gold

By 2022, Groww reached unicorn status, surpassing a $1 billion valuation, and is now used by over 15 million investors across India, including deep penetration into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. The platform’s minimalistic design and jargon-free interface continue to be its hallmark—something Singh’s team protects fiercely.

Fintech Vision Beyond Access

For Singh, Groww is not just about providing access to financial instruments but enabling financial literacy and confidence. “Our job as technologists is not to build complex systems but to simplify finance for millions,” he often says in internal team huddles.

His recent focus has been on integrating AI-powered nudges, personalized investment recommendations, and goal-based planning tools, ensuring that users don’t just transact—but truly understand their investment journey.

What Lies Ahead

As the Indian fintech sector becomes more crowded and regulated, Singh believes the next phase of innovation will involve trust engineering, data privacy, and hyper-personalization. His roadmap for Groww includes expanding into retirement products, international equities, and credit-linked investments, while maintaining simplicity at the core of user experience.
