During the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, he scored his first first-class century while playing for Tamil Nadu against Tripura. The innings showed his ability to build long partnerships and play patient cricket in longer formats.

Washington Sundar entered the IPL in 2017 when he joined the Rising Pune Supergiant as a replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin.

In the 2018 IPL auction, Sundar moved to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. There he became known for bowling economical overs in the powerplay.

Later he joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2022 IPL season.

Ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, Sundar was signed by Gujarat Titans for ₹3.2 crore. The franchise added him to strengthen their spin and all-round options.

Washington Sundar made his international debut for India in December 2017.

He first played an ODI match against the Sri Lanka national cricket team.

Soon after, he made his T20 international debut against the same team.

At the age of 18 years and 80 days, Sundar became one of the youngest players to debut for India in T20 internationals.


Breakthrough in the Nidahas Trophy

Washington Sundar gained wider recognition during the 2018 Nidahas Trophy tournament.

He bowled tight overs during the powerplay and maintained a low economy rate throughout the series. His ability to control runs against aggressive batters stood out.

Sundar also took a three-wicket haul during the tournament. His performances helped India reach the final.

At the end of the series he received the Player of the Series award.


Test Debut and Gabba Performance

Washington Sundar made his Test debut during India’s 2020–21 tour of Australia.

In that match he dismissed Steve Smith for his first Test wicket.

He also scored 62 runs in his first Test innings and built a crucial partnership with Shardul Thakur.

India later won the Test match, ending Australia’s long unbeaten run at the Gabba stadium.
