Indian Government Launches AI Compute Portal, Dataset Repository AIKosha to Boost Innovation

Introduction

Marking the one-year anniversary of the IndiaAI Mission, the government of India has made a number of path-breaking announcements to further artificial intelligence (AI) research and development in the nation. On March 7, 2025, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the India AI Compute Portal and AIKosha, an online repository of datasets and AI models. These efforts are intended to make AI more accessible and affordable and to promote innovation in the field.

MeitY Announces Major AI Initiatives

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is leading India’s push to develop a strong AI infrastructure. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB) report, Vaishnaw highlighted the significance of these new platforms in offering developers, researchers, and companies the tools they need to innovate and grow their AI solutions.

The AI Compute Portal is intended to provide affordable AI computing, network, storage, and cloud services. The platform will initially provide access to 10,000 GPUs and plans to scale capacity by adding 8,693 GPUs in the future. This move should be a game-changer for startups, researchers, and businesses that need high-performance AI processing but might not have the budget to afford such infrastructure.

Conversely, AIKosha acts as a safe repository of AI models and datasets, with a sandbox area where developers can test and deploy AI models in a productive manner. The repository contains over 80 AI models and over 300 datasets, ethically collected to ensure minimal dependency on synthetic and foreign data. AIKosha also offers tutorials and tools to assist AI professionals in upskilling.

Building Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for AI

The government of India is proactively building Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) architectures for AI to promote accessibility and ethical AI adoption. Through this effort, datasets of AIKosha have been designed with meticulous care to emphasize content-centric, ethically harvested data. This process maintains transparency and minimizes dependence on artificial or foreign datasets, thereby making India’s AI ecosystem more robust.

In line with the DPI framework, the government is also endeavoring to scale up Aadhaar authentication for AI-based services so that both public and private organizations can utilize India’s digital identity infrastructure for AI use cases.

IndiaAI Competency Framework and AI Learning Initiatives

For enhancing AI capabilities in India, various AI learning and competency-enhancing programs have been introduced by the government.

AI Competency Framework for Government Officials: This project will provide government officials with basic AI competencies so that they can apply AI-driven solutions to public administration.

iGOT-AI Learning Platform: This personalized AI-based learning platform will offer government employees access to AI learning material through the iGOT Karmayogi portal.

IndiaAI FutureSkills Fellowship: ₹10,300 crore has been sanctioned to add courses for AI in undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. studies. Financial assistance will also be given to students pursuing AI-related courses through the fellowship.

AI Startups and Global Expansion Opportunities

Realizing that AI startups require support, IndiaAI Mission launched an acceleration program in partnership with Station F, a French incubator for startups, and HEC Paris, a leading business school. It will offer shortlisted Indian AI startups mentorship, networking opportunities, and market access globally during a four-month program. It will be segregated into two segments:

The initial month will have online training

The following three months will be done on the ground in Paris, where startups will have practical exposure to the European AI market.

Setting up IndiaAI Data Labs in Tier 2 and Tier 3 Cities

An important aspect of the IndiaAI program is the setting up of IndiaAI Data Labs in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. These labs will be AI learning centers and will provide basic courses in data science. The government has also initiated two specialized courses on:

Data Annotation

Data Curation

These courses are tailored to serve sectors like healthcare, education, and manufacturing so that a wider workforce is equipped with AI-related competencies.

Conclusion

The launch of the AI Compute Portal and AIKosha is an important step in the direction of making India’s AI ecosystem robust. With low-cost AI computing capabilities and ethically sourced data, the government seeks to enable startups, researchers, and businesses. Education and global networking initiatives will also keep India competitive in the changing world of AI.

As AI continues to be a game-changer across sectors, efforts such as these will assist in filling the talent gap, encourage research, and fuel innovation. With robust government support and an ever-expanding AI community, India is well on its way to becoming a world leader in artificial intelligence.
