Simoul Alva Design Work: Making Complex Technology Clear Through Visual Systems

Simoul Alva design work focuses on clarity. At 29, Simoul Alva serves as the visual design lead at Ripple. Her role centres on one task. She explains complex products through visual structure.

In technology and finance, users face dense ideas. Alva uses design to reduce confusion. She builds systems that guide users step by step. The work values function over style.

Early Exposure to Visual Thinking

Simoul Alva grew up watching films and reading widely. These habits shaped how she understood images and stories. She learned early that visuals can explain ideas faster than words.

She later studied at the National Institute of Design. Her work stood out for control and logic. In 2017, she represented India at the 44th WorldSkills Competition in Abu Dhabi. She competed in packaging, editorial design, and visual identity. She earned a medallion of excellence.

This experience exposed her to global design standards.

Training With Global Design Studios

In her final year, Alva interned at Pentagram in New York. She worked with Michael Bierut. The role taught her how identity systems scale across platforms.

She also worked with Samsung Research America’s Think Tank team. Later, she freelanced at Sagmeister & Walsh. In 2019, she joined the studio full time after it became &Walsh.

Brand Systems at &Walsh

At &Walsh, Alva worked on global brands. These included Apple, Amazon, Adobe, Twitch, and Parle Agro’s Frooti. Each project required consistency across digital and physical formats.

One key project involved the visual identity for Geltor, a biodesign company. The system used natural forms and 3D structures. It drew from biology and material science. Design publications covered the work across print and digital platforms.

Jessica Walsh, founder of &Walsh, has described Alva as a designer who balances creativity with structure. She notes Alva’s attention to detail and clear thinking.

Editorial Illustration and Public Work

In 2019, Alva illustrated an article for The New York Times. The piece explored workplace technology. This led to assignments from The Washington Post, Wired, and MIT Technology Review.

These projects sharpened her ability to explain abstract topics. Each illustration focused on sequence and meaning.

Her work has received recognition from the Type Directors Club, D&AD, Art Directors Club, One Club for Creativity, PRINT Magazine, and Communication Arts.

Moving Into Product Design

In 2021, Alva joined Robinhood as senior visual designer and art director. She worked on the Robinhood Retirement project.

Her role covered typography, colour systems, and core visual language. The project received honours at the San Francisco Design Week Awards in 2023.

This phase shifted her focus toward financial products where design affects trust and user decisions.

Visual Design Leadership at Ripple

Alva now leads visual design at Ripple. The company works in blockchain and payments. These systems often feel complex to users.

Her work includes Ripple’s brand refresh, visual systems for flagship events, and design for Ripple USD. She builds frameworks that help users understand products without long explanations.

She describes her strength as comfort with uncertainty. She starts with structure. She then builds clarity through visuals.

Design as a Tool for Understanding

Simoul Alva’s work reflects a change in design practice. Visual design now explains how technology works. It no longer supports products alone.

Her career shows how designers can shape user understanding in finance and tech. The focus stays on logic, access, and trust.

In a fast-moving industry, her work remains steady. Each project asks a simple question. Does this help people understand what they use?
