Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his speech in Lok Sabha, equated the Mahakumbh 2025 with some of the most defining moments in Indian history, such as Swami Vivekananda’s speech in Chicago, the Revolt of 1857, Bhagat Singh’s martyrdom, Subhas Chandra Bose’s “Delhi Chalo” call, and Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March. He emphasized that the Mahakumbh was not just a religious gathering but a reflection of an awakened nation, driven by collective consciousness and spiritual strength.
Mahakumbh as a Defining Moment in History
Modi described the Mahakumbh as a significant milestone in India’s journey, much like other historical events that instilled a sense of unity and self-respect among Indians. He stated, “Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago speech was a resounding declaration of Bharat’s spiritual consciousness. Similarly, our freedom struggle was marked by several such turning points—1857, Bhagat Singh’s sacrifice, Netaji’s ‘Delhi Chalo’ clarion call, and Gandhi’s Dandi March. These occurrences spurred the country and led towards freedom. I find the Prayagraj Mahakumbh to be one such momentous occasion, wherein we are able to witness the reflection of a nation that is awakened.”
The Prime Minister emphasized that just as the Ram Temple consecration in Ayodhya was a symbol of the country’s readiness for the next millennium, the Mahakumbh was a reaffirmation of that faith. He pointed out that this shared consciousness makes the country stronger and brings people from all walks of life together.
Lessons from the Mahakumbh
As per Modi, the Mahakumbh imparted a number of precious lessons to India. It was an occasion where individuals from all corners of the country, using various languages, assembled with one single devotion, uttering “Har Har Gange.” He pointed out that the event showcased the real meaning of ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’ and reiterated the country’s very natural oneness.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Mahakumbh showed that there was no difference between the poor and the rich, the mighty and the ordinary citizens. “It showed Bharat’s great strength and proved that unity is deeply rooted in us. The strength of our being together is so strong that it can defeat any effort to break us apart,” Modi claimed.
In an era when the world is experiencing fragmentation and social divisions, he said that Mahakumbh was a symbol of unity and strength, reminding the world of India’s cultural strength.
Mahakumbh as a People’s Movement
Modi reiterated that Mahakumbh was not a government movement but a people’s movement. It was driven by devotion, collective determination, and unshakeable faith. We have seen the awakening of our national consciousness on a grand scale in the great Mahakumbh. This is what propels our nation towards new solutions and encourages us to realize them. The Mahakumbh has also given a befitting reply to the doubts and misgivings that some people might have had about our collective strength,” he added.
He conveyed his thanks to the crores of devotees, volunteers, and organizers who made Mahakumbh a success. “Today, through this House, I bow down to crores of countrymen, due to whom the Mahakumbh was organized successfully…Many people have contributed to its success. I congratulate all the Karmayogis of the government and society and thank the people of Uttar Pradesh, especially Prayagraj,” Modi said.
Cultural Diplomacy and Global Recognition
Emphasizing the global importance of Mahakumbh, Modi addressed his recent trip to Mauritius, during which he brought holy water from the Triveni Sangam and combined it with the Ganga Talab there. This, he said, represented the way Indian traditions and culture are revered and observed everywhere in the world.
“The world has recognized the spiritual and cultural importance of the Mahakumbh. This demonstrates that our heritage is not confined to our borders but extends globally, strengthening our diplomatic and cultural ties,” he said.
Opposition’s Reaction and Lok Sabha Adjournment
Following Modi’s speech, Opposition members attempted to respond but were denied permission by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, leading to a protest. As they raised slogans against the government, the Speaker adjourned the House until 1 PM. The Opposition also questioned why there was no prior notice regarding the Prime Minister’s statement. However, Birla clarified that Modi’s speech was made under Rule 372, which allows a minister to make a statement on a matter of public importance with the Speaker’s consent, without requiring any debate.
Conclusion
The Mahakumbh 2025, in the opinion of Prime Minister Modi, was not only a religious gathering—it was an emblem of India’s cultural and spiritual awakening. Referring to some of the most significant events in the history of the country, he highlighted its function as a source of unity, national awareness, and sense of direction among citizens. As India continues to evolve as a global leader, such events serve as a reminder of its deep-rooted cultural heritage and the collective strength of its people. Modi’s speech reinforced the idea that Mahakumbh was not just an event of devotion but also a testament to India’s unity and rising global influence.
